In conjunction with Against the Stream Magazine & The Siren, The Lyke Aesthetic is taking a moment to reflect on all the tragedies affecting the Black life in America. My feelings towards them are very simple, this country, our media, and government persist a naive attitude towards race, even though we all know there are some people in this world that are threatened by Blackness, whatever that means to them. Ultimately, the problem is, while this issue is overlooked, my people are dying. My people are DYING! MY PEOPLE ARE DYING!!!!! And it scares the dog piss out of me. Not only do I not have a solution to this problem, I'm afraid to live because of it. I'm afraid to start a family and be successful. I'm afraid of becoming a media professional. At any given moment my life could change all because someone felt threatened by my blackness. And no one can do anything about it.
I can't get over that fact. At least not right now. So I'm taking a break and calling in Black. In the words of Evelyn from the Internets, I need a solid day to reaffirm my humanity.
I'll see y'all on Monday sometime in the afternoon... Maybe.
