You see them all the time on the corner, in the park, in the middle of a snow storm--smokers are everywhere in Chicago. Fortunately, for y’all, there are still a bunch of us who only smoke collard greens, a.k.a. Marijuana. With 420 coming up, everyone’s been re-upping their stashes, finessing their equipment, and calling out sick celebrate the awesomeness of the green. Even though weed is still pretty illegal in the city of Chicago, there are still some great ways to go green without going to jail. Below is the Lyke Aesthetic’s Guide to 420, ensuring that you know the best things to do, places to eat, and music to play throughout the week including that wonderful Wednesday. Scroll down to learn everything you need to plan your 4/20/2016 experience in Chicago the right way.
Things To Do
Since 420 is on a Wednesday this year, most social gatherings related to the unofficial celebration take place on the 22nd and 23rd. On Monday & Tuesday, you can start your pre-elevation at Refuge Live alongside Astro Samurai & When Love Sings open mic events. Then, on Wednesday, let the celebration begin at Spring Breakfast featuring Smart Mouf & Splash Paradise at Columbia College followed by Lucy Stoole’s 420 Drag Show at Beauty Bar. After taking Thursday to come back to the ground, you can enjoy Open Beats April, featuring live mixing from Billy the Kid (Natural Selections), Cos (Push Beats) and Dharma Monkey Soundlabs. The social parties continue through the weekend with the Party Noire: Southern Hospitality Edition Day Party at the Promontory on Saturday, and April’s edition of Micfest, rounding the week out with the Bottomless Brunch & Millennial MeetUp on Sunday.
Places to Eat
If you experience the munchies while you’re up in the clouds, or after leaving one of the events listed above, be sure to stop by any of these fine Southside establishments (because the South Side & Pilsen have the best food in the city, hands down)! I’ve ranked the restaurants from lite bites, to fat & fried, with The Sit Down Cafe & Sushi Bar as the litest and Mikkey Halsted’s being the munchy-est! Uncle John’s/Dat Donut might be the move, though. Especially if they’re going to have that Tips lunch special--one that will make you slap the dog spit out your momma right before Mother’s Day!
artists to play
Even though people typically listen to Mainstream Artists for their Ethereal Playlists, Indie Chicago never disappoints when it comes to creating digable vibrations on this day. Therefore it was easy to create a playlist to get you through the high times. As a matter of fact, some of the artists will be performing live throughout the week, including Splash Paradise’s Roy French as well as Smart Mouf’s Ace Da Vinci. My 420 playlist also features singles from other prominent Chicago artists like Ravyn Lenae's "Moon Shoes", "Vibe" by Jyroscope, Stefan Ponce's "The Drive," and oddCouple's "My Crush" mix. I even threw bae's new track "Kings" into the mix, a crazy song he dropped last week for y'all to get ready for the summer. Get in tune with the playlist below.
