I've been listening to a lot of trap and drill lately. I had to change that after my work trip to LA. Since Jamilah woods & Noname recently dropped new work, I thought I'd clear my music palette with some Black-girl-magic-gospel, brought to us by Jamila Woods & Noname.
Telefone x Noname
what an incredible talent, so much to say and it's so painful and pretty .so happy that this music exits in this world @noname — Corinne Bailey Rae (@CorinneBRae) August 16, 2016
I know the gypsy has been around for a long time, but I recently got hip to her. I know, I know, I'm terrible. BUt better late than never at all. Plus, I now realize the error of my ways. I don't know what the fuck I was doing before listening to noname, but I couldn't have been doing it well or with purpose--laughing but very serious. Also, she's gotten nods from greats like Mick Jenkins and Corrinne Bailey Rae--one cannot simply overlook that shit. so, when My homies Crystal Dunn & Thug SCholar finally put me on to her my love hasn't stopped. As a matter of fact, this was the first thing I played when I arrived at work this morning. Diddy Bop, Reality Check and CAsket Pretty give me all the feels I need and are amazing songs. Heavn x Jamila Woods
"For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight."
I had the honor of hearing most of this album live well before it was released last month. Ms. Woods chose to bless us with her amazing project in an intimate performance at the double door, which felt more like a conjuring of spirits. The entire congregation was moved by every word, every note--Her music gives me so much life, not just because of it's air, but because of it's healing power. Jamilah is inherently positive throughout this album and reminds us of how holy and divine we (blacks) are as people. In her album description, she writes, "For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight." My personal faves are Blk Girl Soldier, HEAVN, Stellar and HOly! PLay now below and click here to download.
